True Shia(supporters) of Ali were neither Rafidi nor Saba’ee

Majority of Ali’s(ra) Shia(supporters) were neither Rafidi nor Saba’ee.

Bismillaahi Walĥamdulillaahi waŝŝalaatu wassalaamu ‘alaa rasoolillaahi.

We have noticed that most of the lay Shias today are leading a life full of ignorance and illusion, they believe that the supporters(Shia) of Ali(ra) were those who hated Abubakr(ra), Umar(ra), Ayesha(as), etc, and held the same believes as that of Twelver Shia, but the reality is far from this myth, because the fact is that the True Shia of Ali, held Abubakr(ra) and Umar(ra) in high regards and this constitutes majority of Shia of Ali(ra). Let us present before the readers the testimonies of two esteemed Shia scholars.

(i). The classical Shia scholar al-Shareef al-Murtada (d.436 AH) says in his book “al-Shafi fil-Imamah” 3/113:

ومعلوم أن جمهور أصحابه وجلهم كانوا ممن يعتقد إمامة من تقدم عليه ع وفيهم من يفضلهم على جميع الأمة

[And it is known that the vast majority of his (`Ali’s) companions used to believe in the Imamah of those who preceded him (meaning the first three), and among them were those who favored them over the entire nation.]

Comment: The biggest of the Shia scholars admit that the first Shia or supporters of `Ali (ra) used to think very highly of Abu Bakr (ra) and `Umar (ra).

(ii). Esteemed Shia scholar at-Tabarsi in his book “Khatimatul Mustadrak” (5/18) said:

ومن هنا يعلم: ان الذين قتلوا مع امير المؤمنين (عليه السلام) في الحروب الثلاثة كانوا شهداء وفيهم كثير ممن كانوا يتولونهما

Footnote says:

Translation:

“and from this it is known: that those who fought along with commander of faithful (alaihi salam) in 3 battles (Jamal;Nahravan; Siffin) and became a martyrs, and between them were a lot of (people) who befriended them”.

Footnote:

Mean those who befriended two caliphs: First and Second. (“Khatimatul Mustadrak” 5/18).

(iii). Shia Scholar Muhmmad Taqi Tustari stated:

Majority of Ali’s(ra) army were not Mustabsireen(Shia). [Qamoos al-Rijaal, vol 1, page 33]

(iv).  Shia scholar Majlisi records the statement of Shaikh Zainul Abideen that he said :
از احادیث ظاهر میشود که جمعی از راویان که در اعصار ائمه بودهاند از شیعیان اعتقاد بعصمت ایشان نداشتهاند بلکه ایشان را از علماي نیکوکار میدانستهاند چنانچه از رجال کشی ظاهر میشود و مع ذلک ائمه (ع) حکم بایمان بلکه بعدالت ایشان میکردهاند
As is apparent from ahadith, a group of Shia narrators didn’t consider their Imams to be infallibles, but considered them pious scholars only, as is apparent from Rijal al-kashi. Still, the Imams praised their faith and righteousness. (Haqqul Yaqeen, Vol. 2, p. 245).

Zaydi Shia scholar Refutes the Twelver Shia sect.

Ibn al-Murtaḍā, the Zaydi Shia scholar, answers the Twelver Shias:

If they claim that ʿAmmār, Abū Dhar al-Ghifārī, Miqdād ibn Aswad and Salmān al-Fārsī were their predecessors as they believed in the Imāmah of ʿAlī, they are proven to be liars by the fact that neither did display any kind of disassociation from Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, nor did they revile them. Do you not see that ʿAmmār was ʿUmar’s governor in Kūfah and Salmān was his governor in Madā’in. (Al-Munyah wa l-Amal pg. 124, 125).

Few examples of True(Haqeeqi) Shia of Ali(ra) and their views which testify that they were far away from Rafidi/Saba’ee ideology:

The below personalities are highly revered by Twelver Shia, and are considered to be TRUE Shia of Ali(ra). It is worthy to note that, their views clearly prove that True Shia of Ali(ra) had no traces of Rafidi ideology, as found today in Twelver Shia.

(i). Ammar bin Yassir(ra):

“On the day of the camel(jamal), Ammar [Ibn Yassir] saw a congregation, so he asked: ‘What is this?’So it was said to him: A man who curses Aaishah and reviles her.’ So he(Ammar) went to him and said: ‘Shut up ! You are rebuked and you are refuted ! Do you revile the Habibah (the beloved one) of the Prophet (pbuh) ? Indeed she is his wife in Paradise”.(Hadeeth No. 1647, Fadha’il Al-Sahabah by Imam Ahmad, authenticated by Shaykh Al-Muhaddith Wasiyullah Al-’Abbas Al-Hindi ).

Comment: We find that the true Shia(supporter) of Ali, Ammar bin Yassir(ra) wasn’t able to tolerate Mother of believers Ayesha(as) being reviled by an evil Rafidi, He harshly rebuked him and informed him about the true status of Ayesha(as).

(ii). Asma bint Umays(ra):

In Fada’il al-Sahaba by Ahmad ibn Hanbal we read:

[Yahya bin Zakaria said: My father and ibn abi Khalid told me: from al-Sha`bi: `Ali married Asma’ bint `Umays so her two sons Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr and Muhammad ibn Ja`far started boasting with pride, each saying: “I am better and my father is better than yours.” So `Ali said to Asma’: “Why don’t you be the judge between them?” So she said to ibn Ja`far: “As for you son, I have not seen a young man among the Arabs better than your father Ja`far.” Then she said to Muhammad: “And as for you, I have not seen a mature man among the Arabs better than your father Abu Bakr.” `Ali then said to Asma’ (jokingly): “You’ve left nothing for me? (but) If you had said otherwise I would have hated it.” She replied to him: “By Allah, if you are the lesser from among the three men then you’re all great.“] (Ibn Hajar said “Isnaduhu Sahih” in al-Isabah 4/231).

Comment: In this report we find Asma’(ra) praising her last husband Abu Bakr(ra) and declaring in front of `Ali (ra) that Abu Bakr (ra) was better than him. She told `Ali (ra) that the fact that these two men are better than him, and he is who he is, then all three of them must be truly great. If the lesser of the three was `Ali (ra), then one can only imagine the greatness of the second two men. Now the point to ponder is that, if at all Abubakr(ra) was some who oppressed Ahlelbayt, then why would Asma(ra) the true Shia of Ali(ra), after the death of Abubakr(ra) hold him in such high regards, that too saying his before Ali(ra)? SubhanAllah see how the Rafidah deviated.

(iii). Umm Salamah(as):

It was narrated from Umm Salamah that the wives of the Prophet asked her to speak to the Prophet and tell him, that the people were trying to bring their gifts to him when it was ‘Aishah’s day, and to say to him:”We love good things as much as ‘Aishah does.” So she spoke to him, but he did not reply her. When her turn came again, she spoke to him again, but he did not reply her. They said to her: “How did he respond?” She said: “He did not answer me.” They said: “Do not leave him alone until he answers you or you comprehend what he says.” When her turn came again, she spoke to him and he said: ‘Do not bother me about ‘Aishah, for the Revelation has never come to me under the blanket of any of you apart from the blanket of ‘Aishah.’“(Sunan an-Nasa’i #3950 ; Grading: Sahih).

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani narrated that when Umm Salamah heard that Aisha died, she said: “May Allah forgive her. By Allah in whose hand is my soul, after her father, she was most beloved (person) for prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa ala alihi wa sallam)” (Matalibul aliyah” 5/#4142; “Taqrib al-bughya bi tartib ahadeth al-Hilliyah” 3/126/#3379.)  Busiri said: “Taylasi narrated this hadith with authentic chain”( Footnote at the page 75, volume 5 of “Matalibul aliyah”.).

Comment: Here we find that Umm Salamah(as), who is considered as true supporter of Ali(ra), the one who narrated many virtues of Ahlelbayt, she narrates the high status of Ayesha(as) and her Father(ra), as they were most beloved to Prophet(saw)

(iv). Ibn Abbas(ra):

Narrated Al−Miswar bin Makhrama: When `Umar was stabbed, he showed signs of agony. Ibn Abbas, as if intending to encourage `Umar, said to him, “O Chief of the believers(Ameer al-Momineen)! Never mind what has happened to you, for you have been in the company of Allah’s Apostle and you kept good relations with him and you parted with him while he was pleased with you. Then you were in the company of Abu Bakr and kept good relations with him and you parted with him (i.e. he died) while he was pleased with you. Then you were in the company of the Muslims, and you kept good relations with them, and if you leave them, you will leave them while they are pleased with you.“( Sahi bukhari 5.41)

Comment: We find that Abdullah ibn Abbas(ra), the True Shia of Ali, held a very good and positive view towards Umar(ra), wherein he believed that Prophet(saw) was pleased with Umar(ra).

Ahmed narrated in the Chapter of “Virtues” that Thikran, the slave of Ayesha, “asked for Ayesha’s permission to let Ibn Abbas enter at the time of her death. Abdullah bin Abdulrahman, the son of her brother was present also. Thikran said, “Here is Ibn Abbas asking for your permission to enter. He is the best of your sons.” She said, “Let me off from Ibn Abbas and his justification and purification.” Abdullah bin Abdulrahman told her, “He is a reader of the Book of Allah, and is knowledgeable in the religion of Allah. Let him in to give a salam to you, and to say goodbye.” Ayesha answered, “Let him in if you want to.” Abdullah said, “I will give him the permission.” So Ibn Abbas came in, made salam, and had a seat. He said, “O’ Mother of Beleivers, be happy. By Allah, there is nothing between the removal of pain and lie and the meeting of the beloved ones, Muhammad and his Companions except that your soul leaves your body.” Ayesha said, “What else?” Ibn Abbas answered, “You were the most beloved wife to the messenger of Allah peace be upon him. He loved none but purity. Allah Almighty revealed your innocence from the seven heavens. There is no mosque on earth that does not recite the verses that proves your innocence day and night. One day your necklace was dropped, so the prophet peace be upon him got caught with the people in the house. And when they wanted to pray, they did not have water. So Allah revealed the verse of Tayamum. It was a permission for people came through you. By Allah, you are holy. She said, “Leave me O’ Ibn Abbas from this. By Allah, I wish I was forgotten.” (Virtues of the Companions, by Ahmed, vol.2, #1639, with a strong attribution).

(v). Jabir bin Abdullah(ra):

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah: The Prophet(saw) said, “I saw myself (in a dream) entering Paradise, and behold! I saw Ar-Rumaisa’, Abu Talha’s wife. I heard footsteps. I asked, Who is it? Somebody said, ‘It is Bilal ‘ Then I saw a palace and a lady sitting in its courtyard. I asked, ‘For whom is this palace?’ Somebody replied, ‘It is for `Umar.‘ I intended to enter it and see it, but I thought of your (`Umar’s) Ghira (and gave up the attempt).” `Umar said, “Let my parents be sacrificed for you, O Allah’s Messenger(saw)! How dare I think of my Ghira (self-respect) being offended by you?. ( Sahih al-Bukhari 3679).

Comment: Jabir bin Abdullah(ra), the true Shia of Ali, narrated a report in virtues of Umar(ra), where we find that Umar(ra) was allotted a palace in paradise.

Moreover, Jabir(R) relied upon his experiences with Abu Bakr(R) as a juristic proof.

Jabir bin Abdullah(R) said: Once he ate with Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq(R), and that Abu Bakr ate shoulder meat cooked over fire, and then stood and led them in prayer, without making wudhu(after eating cooked meat).[Musannaf Abdur Razzaq, vol 1, page 167, #647].

(vi). Abu Dharr al-Ghifari(ra):

[abu `Ali al-Husayn ibn `Ali al-Naysaburi (Thiqah Hafiz) -> `Abdan abu Ahmad al-Ahwazi (Thiqah Hafiz) -> Haroun ibn Ishaq al-Hamdani (Thiqah Hafiz) -> abu Khalid al-Ahmar (Saduq Qarib min al-Thiqah) -> Hisham ibn al-Ghazi bin Rabee`ah (Thiqah) & Muhammad ibn `Ajlan al-Qurashi (Saduq) & Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar (Saduq Shi`ee Mudallis) -> Makhoul al-Shami (Thiqah Faqih) -> Ghudayf bin al-Harith (Tabi`ee Thiqah)

From abu Dharr (ra): A young boy passed by `Umar so `Umar said: “Such a good young boy.” abu Dharr followed the boy and said: “Young lad, ask Allah to grant me his forgiveness!” The boy replied: “O aba Dharr, I ask for your forgiveness when you are the companion of the messenger of Allah (saw)!?” abu Dharr insisted and repeated his request: “Ask for my forgiveness.” so the boy refused and said: “Would you tell me why?” abu Dharr explained, he said: “You passed by `Umar may Allah be pleased with him and he said: Such a good young boy. And I had heard the messenger of Allah (saw) saying: Allah has placed the truth on `Umar’s tongue and in his heart.”(Mustadrak al-Hakim).

Comment: As the reader can see, Abu Dharr(ra) the True Shia of Ali, was from those who held `Umar (ra) in the greatest esteem, he had much respect and loyalty for him, so when he saw him praise the young boy (who is Ghudayf ibn al-Harith), he hurriedly followed and asked this blessed child to make Du`a for him. Although, if we assume he was an “Imami Rafidhi”, he would have only asked `Ali (ra) as they believe he holds the keys of heaven and hell.

(vii). Muhammad ibn Hanafiyyah(ra):

Narrated Muhammad bin Al-Hanafiya: I asked my father (`Ali bin Abi Talib), “Who are the best people after Allah’s Apostle ?” He said, “Abu Bakr.” I asked, “Who then?” He said, “Then `Umar. ” I was afraid he would say “Uthman, so I said, “Then you?” He said, “I am only an ordinary person. (Sahi bukhari 5.20).

Comment: We find that the True Shia of Ali, Muhammad ibn Hanafiyyah, reported from his father Ali(ra), that the best people after Prophet(saw) were Abubakr(ra) and Umar(ra). And he passed on this fact to his children, due to which we find this was the reaction of his son al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Hanafiyyah when he found rafidah abusing Abubakr(ra) and Umar(ra) .

From Hilal bin Khabab from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad bin al-Hanafiyyah that he said: “O people of Kufa fear Allah and do not say bad things about Abu Bakr and ‘Umar, Abu bakr was al-Siddiq may Allah be pleased with him and he was the second of the two in the cave with the Prophet PBUH, and as for ‘Umar, Allah had strengthened Islam with ‘Umar.” .(Fadael al-Sahaba wa Manaqibihim wa Qawl Ba’adihim fi Ba’ad” by the famous scholar of Hadith al Darqutni)
Grading: Hasan.

(viii). Abu al-Tufayl(ra):

We read in Ikmal Tahdheeb al-Kamal” by al-Hanafi:

وقال أبو عمر: كان محبا في علي يعترف بفضل الشيخين إلا أنه كان يقدم عليا وكان ثقة مأمونا

[And abu `Umar said: “He (Abu al-Tufayl) was a lover of `Ali, he admits to the virtues of the Shaykhayn (Abu Bakr & `Umar) however he used to place `Ali before them and he was Thiqah and reliable.]

If we check Abu al-Tufayl’s (ra) biography in “Tahdheeb al-Tahdheeb” by al-Hafiz ibn Hajar al-`Asqalani, we read:

روى عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وعن أبي بكر وعمر وعلي ومعاذ ابن جبل وحذيفة وابن مسعود وابن عباس وأبي سريحة ونافع بن عبد الحارث وزيد ابن ارقم وغيرهم

[He narrated from the Prophet(saw) and Abu Bakr, and `Umar, and `Ali, and Mu`adh ibn Jabal amd Hudhayfah and ibn Mas`oud and Ibn `Abbas …]

Abu al-Tufayl (ra) although he had extreme love for `Ali (ra) and his family, yet he didn’t have any extreme misguidance, he would narrate narrations that prove that `Ali (ra) had no secret divine knowledge nor did the Prophet(saw) tell him any holy secrets like the Shia of today claim, we read in Musnad abi Ya`la al-Mousili:

… Abu al-Tufayl `Amir bin Wathilah said: I was with `Ali bin abi Talib when a man came to him and said: “What secrets did the messenger (SAWS) tell you?” So `Ali got angry and said: “The Prophet(saw) would not tell him anything that he would keep hidden from the rest of the people! However, he did tell me these four words: Allah curses he who curses his parents, Allah curses he who sacrifices for other than Allah, Allah curses he… (Husayn Salim Asad said: Isnad Sahih).

(ix). Muhammad bin Abu bakr.

In Fada’il al-Sahaba by Ahmad ibn Hanbal we read:

[Yahya bin Zakaria said: My father and ibn abi Khalid told me: from al-Sha`bi: `Ali married Asma’ bint `Umays so her two sons Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr and Muhammad ibn Ja`far started boasting with pride, each saying: “I am better and my father is better than yours.” (Ibn Hajar said “Isnaduhu Sahih” in al-Isabah 4/231).

Comment: In this report we find that Muhammad bin Abu bakr, who is considered as a true Shia of Ali(ra), believed and was boasting that his father Abu bakr as-siddiq(ra) was better.

(x). Salman al Farsi(ra) and Miqdad(ra):

We read in Shia books Talkhees al-Shafi:
تولى سلمان لعمر المدائن
Salman acted as governor for Umar(ra) in Madain.
Talkhees al-Shafi , p. 402
Also refer Hayat-ul-Qulub:Vol.2, p.780.

Comment: We find that the true Shia of Ali, Salman al Farsi(ra), was loyal to Caliph Umar(ra) and accepted the position of governor given to him by Umar(ra).

Likewise, Miqdad(ra) also remained loyal to the Caliphs during his life, We read in Tareekh Tabari that Miqdad(ra) took part in the battle of Cyprus in 28 H. during the era of Uthman(ra) under the leadership of Muawiyah(ra).

We read:

In the Jihad of Cyprus several Sahaba(ra) took part, among these were Abu Dhar, Ubadah bin al-samith, His wife Umm Haraam, Miqdad, Abu al-dardah, May Allah be pleased with them, were present. (Tarikh at-Tabari, vol 3, page 292)

(xi). Hassan bin Ali bin Abu Talib(ra):

When Hasan(ra) entered upon Uthman(ra), he said, “O Commander of the Faithful! I am under your command, so order me as you wish.” Uthman(ra) answered, “My dear brother’s son! Go back, and stay in your home until Allah carries out His order. I do not need the shedding of blood.” [Musnad Ahmed, Virtues of the Companions, #753]

Comment: In this report we find that Hassan(ra) who is considered as a True Shia of Ali(ra), during the time of fitna when the rebels had surrounded the house of Caliph Uthman(ra). Hassan(ra) came to defend him, which shows the highest level of loyalty and willingness to sacrifice his life defending the Caliph.

The conditions of peace between given by Hasan(ra) to Muawiyah(ra):

In the name of Allah , the beneficent, the most Merciful. These are the conditions of peace between Hasan bin Ali bin Abi Talib and Muawiya bin Abi Sufyan. The first condition is that you should follow Quran , Sunnah and the seerah of the righteous Caliphs. [(Jila ul Ayun, Page 232) , (Ibn `Aqil, al-Nasa’ih al-Kafiya, p. 156), (Al-Majlisi, Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 10, p. 115)]

Comment: We find that Hassan(ra) considered the previous Caliphs as righteous.

(xii). Children of Sayyida Fatima(as):

From Jabir, from Mohammed bin Ali (Al-Baqir), “There is a consensus among the children of Fatima (as) to say the best possible praise for Abu Bakr and Omar.” (Fadha’il Al-Sahaba by Al-Daraqutni, p. 83).

Conclusion:

Hence these are few examples of the TRUE Shia of Ali, who held Abubakr(ra), Umar(ra), Ayesha(as) in high regards, and majority of Shia of Ali(ra) were upon this path, which proves the extremist Rafidi ideology to be odd which was held by a minority of Shia(supporters) of Ali(ra). As for the ideology of true Shia of Ali, then here is a testimony from a Shia of Ali, where we read:

Abu al-Qassim al-Balkhi said: A questioner asked Shareek bin `Abdullah bin abi Nimr: ” Who is best, Abu Bakr or `Ali?” he replied: “Abu Bakr.” The questioner asked: “You say this and you’re from the Shia!?” He said: “Yes, a (true) Shia would only say this. By Allah `Ali said: The best of this nation after its Prophet is Abu Bakr then `Umar. Do you expect us to accuse him(Ali) of lying? By Allah he was no liar!”(Minhaj al-Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah 1/13).

And when it is said to them, “Believe sincerely as the other people have believed”, they reply, “Should we believe as fools have believed?” Beware! they themselves are the fools, but they know it not.(Surat al-Baqarah: 13).
